Titled Physiotherapist – Jonathan (Jono) Harris

A Titled Physiotherapist in Australia is a physiotherapist recognized by the Australian Physiotherapy Association (APA) and the Australian College of Physiotherapists (ACP) as having advanced expertise, specialized knowledge, and significant clinical experience in a specific area of practice.

How do they differ from General Physiotherapists?

General Physios:    Complete an approved university degree and register with AHPRA to practice safely across a broad range of general conditions. A bachelor’s degree in physiotherapy takes approx. 4 years of full-time study, in Australia.

Titled Physios:    Complete additional post-graduate education (typically a Master's degree) in a niche field, log extensive hands-on clinical hours, and pass rigorous assessments to prove their advanced capabilities. It generally takes an extra 3-5yrs to become a Titled Physio after completing your Bachelor’s degree. You will often see the letters MACP after their name.

As of 2026, there are more than 50,000 registered physiotherapists in Australia. Thirty five percent of all registered practitioners are titled physiotherapists.  Less than 1% of physiotherapists have 2 Titles!

The "Titled" Tier: According to the APA 2025 Workforce Census, only about 35% of surveyed physiotherapists hold a clinical master's degree, which is typically required to earn a single specialized "APA Titled" credential (such as Musculoskeletal, Sports & Exercise, or Neurological Physiotherapist).

Double Titles: Achieving dual-titled status requires a physiotherapist to successfully complete two distinct clinical postgraduate pathways or master's degrees and file separate formal credentials with the APA. Because of the extreme academic requirements, individuals with double clinical titles represent an incredibly small, elite fraction of the workforce—well under 1% of all registered practitioners.
